Is ℒℴѵℯ the ‘Like’ for Twitter?

For those who follow trending topics on Twitter, you might have noticed over the past few weeks that the word ℒℴѵℯ is appearing as a worldwide trend.

This got me thinking.

Firstly why is it a different font and secondly whether people are using ℒℴѵℯ as the ‘Like’ equivalent for Twitter?

After some good old Googling, I found that the word ℒℴѵℯ is actually made up of short pieces of unicode that people are inserting into their tweets to display special characters or fonts. Hence the reason why we sometimes see certain icons such as ♥ and ☺ appearing on tweets.

This leaves me with my second question: are people using ℒℴѵℯ as the ‘Like’ equivalent for Twitter?

If we look at Facebook, Facebook has more than 500 million registered users and there is no denying that it has become a mainstream medium for brand marketers.  The ‘Like’ button has fundamentally shifted the way people interact with brands they like.

Statistics show that on average, each one of those 500 million Facebook users click on the ‘Like’ button at least 6 times a day, amounting to 3 billion ‘likes’ a day.

3,000,000,000,000 ‘likes’ a day.

That’s a lot of liking.

How does this translate across to Twitter?

175 million users are currently registered on Twitter. With a daily growth rate of 500,000 users signing up each day, it is not surprise that some of these might be Facebook users and would want to ‘Like’ tweets as well. Except there isn’t that option. I for one, have noticed a lot of a lot of re-tweets that begin with the word ‘Like’.

Just as people endorse statuses, brands and links with a ‘Like’ on Facebook, the same applies on Twitter. With ℒℴѵℯ, Twitter users are simply giving their endorsement to a status update or a recommendation on something they love.
